A VOYAGE IN TIME

#9 "A whale is often fond of eating whaleboats and men."

Whale men not only had to undergo the perils of the sea, but ran the danger of being killed by the whale.  If a whaleboat were upset, and it was seen that the crew had something to cling to in order to stop them from going under, they often were afloat for some time, even over night, before other boats rendered assistance.  Being a truism among whale men that whales were of much higher commercial value than men.
