There were many essential trades and occupations required during a voyage.
Maintenance of spars, rigging, canvas repair and replacement, whaling gear
put in order, new equipment forged, and new cask to be coopered.
New canvas was made into sails and old canvas repaired in the sail loft. Weather permitting, this work would be done top side avoiding the cramped quarters within the loft.
