A VOYAGE IN TIME

#24 The Wanderer was the last active whaler to leave New Bedford.  She was built in Mattapoisett in 1878.  Between 1883 and 1904 she sailed with the North Pacific Fleet out of San Francisco, then returned to New Bedford in 1904 to resume Sperm Whaling.  In 1913 she brought back 5,300 barrels of sperm oil from a five month trip, which was one of the biggest loads ever brought into New Bedford.

The ship was fitted out for a whaling voyage and sailed from New Bedford on August 15, 1924.  The next day she was wrecked on the 'sow and Pig Reef' off Cuttyhunk Island during a storm.
