Historically important, Centre Street is located at the head of city
Pier-2. It is opposite the working waterfront. The whaling try pots were
located at the foot of the street
At one time, Centre Street was lined with commercial buildings. The British Invasion of 1778 and the Fire of 1820 nearly destroyed all of them. After the rebuilding and restoration, most of the buildings were used as Ship Chandlery, paint shop, offices, iron trade business, warehouse and cold storage.
