A VOYAGE IN TIME
#22
When a whaler returned, the whale oil gaugers tested the quality and
quantity of oil. The owners, dressed in silk hats, long-tailed coats, and
polished top boots, were often seen watching, testing and marking the
oil-barrels. Many times the oil was stored on the wharves at New Bedford
awaiting a favorable market.
