A VOYAGE IN TIME

#21  The Butler Flats Light was brought into service on 30 April, 1898 by its' first keeper, Captain Amos C. Baker Jr., (1848-1891) and his son Charles A. Baker who became keeper in 1911, upon the death of his father.  He held this position until 1941.

The foundation of the lighthouse was bell shaped, 33 feet to 39 feet in diameter and 39 feet high.  An additional 25 feet towered from the basement to the top.  The keeper had living accommodations within the lighthouse.  The light revolved, making two revolutions a minute and hence one flash every five seconds.

The US coast Guard took over the keepers duties from 1948 to 1972.  The Beacon and Horn were automated in 1978.
