A VOYAGE IN TIME

#18 The carcass was towed to the side of the boat and the blubber was stripped, spiral faction, and hauled aboard.  The "Junk", or blubber, was first carved in blocks, called "Horse Pieces", then further sliced up as "Bible leaves".

The books of blubber were then "Tried Out" (boiled) in large iron pots, built in to the Try-Works.  Oil would come out of the blubber the way grease comes out of bacon.

There was always danger of fire spreading.  Many ships had a wooden shelter above the try-works to stop flying sparks and rain from falling into the boiling oil.
