Thirty-four whalers were caught in ice in the
Arctic regions and sunk. While the loss reached 1.5 million dollars, no
life was lost. Whaleboats were hauled up on Blossom Shoals, where the
shipwrecked crews spent the night crowded under the upturned boats. There
were 7 whalers that had not been lost in the ice. These ships picked up all
1217 men, women and children and took them home. The loss to the New
Bedford owners was so tremendous that they never really recovered from the
catastrophe.
