#12 The big houses of whaling merchants and captains had "walks" on the roofs (later known as "Widow's Walks") where wives could watch for incoming ships.  There were many wives left to watch, for most voyages lasted three or four years.  The wives of whaleman had a loneliness of their own, as did the whalemen separated from all that they held dear on earth, with almost a certainty of being apart for years.
