The Sperm Whale is the most numerous of great whales. It is the largest of
the toothed whales and roams virtually in all ice-free ocean expanses. Its
diet consists of squid and fish and may dive a mile or more. It can remain
submerged for at least an hour. The sperm figured prominently in whaling's
most adventurous era in the 19th century and numbered about 1.2 million.
Their numbers have since been reduced to about 600,000 and now rank
commercially as the most widely sought cetacean.
